does it work when manually configured? i.e. when you do
"/sbin/ifconfig -a" do you see the new eth device?

and if you do /sbin/ifconfig ethN up  (where N is the number of the
wireless interface) ,
can you see nearby access points with "iwlist scan" afterwards?
