Some more info,

After manually setting essid and nick, upping the interface with a known
good IP address and trying to generate some traffic, I get:

eth1: New link status: Disconnected (0002)
eth1: MAC address 00:90:4B:24:3B:61
eth1: Broadcom Wireless LAN Adapter at 02:03.0, mem:0xFAFEC000 to 0xFAFEE000 irq:11 ready
eth1: New link status: Connected (0001)
NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth1: transmit timed out
eth1: Tx timeout! <6>NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth1: transmit timed out
eth1: Tx timeout!

As previously, the rate doesn't change from 54Mbps:

eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"khasa" Nickname:"khruzes"
          Mode:Ad-Hoc Cell: 02:02:A5:2D:4F:45 Bit Rate=54Mb/s
          Tx-Power=14 dBm
          RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

ifconfig eth1 shows the following:
10:52:29 [+1]# ifconfig eth1
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:90:4B:24:3B:61
          inet addr:192.168.169.17 Bcast:192.168.169.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

          RX bytes:806 (806.0 b) TX bytes:252 (252.0 b)

note the error count on TX!
