You need to have the rights to connect to the wireless network. Saying 
if the network maintainer put in an ACL (access control list) the MAC 
address of your card needs to be in that list. You also need to have 
the same ESSID which is the network name of the wireless net. 
Additionally if the maintainer uses WEP encryption you need to have the 
same WEP key and have to use the same encryption depth.
