[hcflinux] new driver - kernel crash with 2.2.x kernel when using ppp-off

title says it all nearly - I'm running the driver of 25th April on a
14F1/1034 modem and a 2.2.18 kernel.
It has run well (if still prone to hang) till today when
Shutting down the i/f (it was in demand dialling mode and running) with
ppp-off provoked 
'Aiee...
etc and a kernel-crash message apparently similar to the one 2.2.x
series kernels were producing a month ago.
