Have you tried the latest version, released today?
(hcflinmodem-0.93mbsibeta02052100)

Does it at least solve the device presence issue?

Do any abnormal messages appear in /var/log/messages or "dmesg" command output?

When I query the modem I get, "sorry, modem can't be opened". When I try to connect, "kppp can't find dev/modem".
