Hi guys..

remember, this is a "winmodem" or now I guess its a "linmodem"

that means that your CPU is responsible for alot of the stuff that a serial
modem does for you..

if you dont' give it enough cpu time, it will end with a dropped
connection..

I discovered that myself the hard way.. from the console with wvdial I got
very few disconnections..
with KDE and KPPP, (or wvdial) I got alot of disconnections..

I settled on icewm and wvdial.. and that worked alright..

on a windows computer, a 150mhz cpu is the minimium required for a winmodem,
and even thats not enough..

these linux drivers are not as efficient as their windows counterparts..
that will take time and work on Marc's behalf.. windows has a long headstart
on linux.. but it will happen..

if you have an athlon 1000mhz+ you probably will have no trouble at all...

with icewm and wvdial on a 233mmx system with 160mb of ram it was pretty
good.. but not perfect..

now I have ADSL so I am as happy as a pig in sh!t.. :-)

rgds

Frank.

Subject: [hcflinux] pppd died enexpectedly, randomly....

I have tried using KPPP and X-isp, and both seem to get disconnected at
random times, while using KPPP, I get the error message, "pppd died
unexpectedly" and "exit status 16" and that exit status means that the link
was terminated by the modem hanging up.

and this is part of the lastcallstatus log that caught my eye...
<TX FRAME ERROR COUNT=77>
<RX FRAME ERROR COUNT=7>
<TERMINATION CAUSE=Call in progress>

and here is a sample of what I think is me getting disconnected in my
/var/log/messages file...
0142452.908: CWPhase4: RE-ENABLE CW in Tx 0x60
May 25 11:42:01 localhost kernel: 0142704.679: CWPhase4: RE-ENABLE CW in Tx

May 25 11:52:28 localhost pppd[25661]: Connect time 38.7 minutes.
May 25 11:52:28 localhost pppd[25661]: Sent 673926 bytes, received 3801584
bytes.
May 25 11:52:29 localhost pppd[25661]: Exit.

if you have any idea why it keeps disconnecting me like this, please help!
thank you! Oh ya, and it seems to disconnect mainly when I run more things
at once that are trying to get data off the internet.... thank you again.
