After switching from kppp to rp3 for unrelated reasons, reliability of 
connections is massively enhanced - I'm not sure they're ever breaking due to 
software problems.  Connecting is sluggish, but I suspect that's got more to 
do with rp3 than the drivers.

Strangely, though rp3 is just a front end to wvdial, wvdial itself doesn't 
succeed when invoked from the command line.

Let me know if you'd like comparative logs or anything like that.
