Fixed it. For some reason, the /dev/modem link was pointing to the wrong device. I was able to fix it with the: ln -s /dev/<device> /dev/modem command after deleting the modem link. I'm using Mandrake 8.2, and was using the kppp dialer. Hope this helps someone. Thanks for the reply.
