[hcflinux] dev/modem to dev/ttySHCFO doesnt do it

I went through all the previous posts looking for a solution to my modem not 
responding [ installed driver and configured modem]  I read that I should 
enter  rm -f/dev/modem/   and then enter ln -s/dev/ttySHCFO /dev/modem   but 
the commands didn't take - I was referred to help - couldn't figure that out 
either. I'm lost
