Congrats.  At least we have established that your hardware is working. 
 The failure to login from the minicom terminal may have something to do 
with requirements for secure channels, encrypted passwords, etc.  I am 
not sure - it has been years since I used a dialup modem for internet 
access.  If you're still having problems getting the communications 
programs going in gnome and so forth I'd try one of the linux 
newsgroups:   comp.os.linux.misc  comp.os.linux.hardware , in that 
order.  I've gotten lots of help over a long time through that.
