To All:

I'm having troubling setting up the WinModem on
this 4 years old SONY laptop.

Fyi, I just recently installed Mandrake 9.1
using default KDE 3.1.

When I did

rpm -i hcfpcimodem-0.99lnxtbeta03042700k2.4.21_0.13mdk-1mdk.586.rpm

I get a bunch of outputs (see below) including

Your HCF modem should now be accessible as /dev/ttySHCF0

This file does not exists. When I

ls /dev/ttyS* ,

I only get ttyS0 and ttyS2 .

And if I use Mandrake Control Center afterward,
I get same responsei as before I try the
installation, i.e.,

Your modem isn't supported by the system.
Take a look at http://www.linmodems.org

So now what?

Sheng-Chieh

p.s. outputs from various code are listed below.

Checking vendor=127a through chipset providers and modem assemblers

Vendors 127a and 14f1 are Conexnant, successor to Vendor=148d Rockwell technology.
 Check for support at: http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/links.html

Conexant modems have substitutes for the lines below,
which automate insertion of ppp related modules.
Unless confident that your modem installation program
has installed an alternative modem specific block,
the following lines should be added to /etc/modules.conf
### generic ppp support lines
alias /dev/ppp ppp_generic
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
