Jean-Simon, sorry about the slow response.  The problem of the HCFPCIHW
driver not loading after a reboot has disappeared.  I am still getting
Internet connectivity problems after varying amounts of time after the
dial-up, anywhere from 30 minutes to 30 hours.  I don't think the trigger is
volume.  I can PING by local ppp0 address, but not the next hop or any other
address on the Internet.  My local ISP periodically 'hangs' even though the
modem connection is still up, with PINGs timing out.  I'm not convinced this
is the same problem on Linux - I don't see any PING timeout errors, and I'm
getting the following error message from PING after about 30 seconds:

I've been using the RedHat 'ifdown ppp0' and 'ifup ppp0' commands to reset
the connection.  This restores connectivity most of the time.  I've noticed
a few times that I end up with both a ppp0 and and ppp1 connection, probably
because the first 'kill' of ppp0 did not 'take' (I see /var/log/messages
errors about TTYSHCF0 locked by ppp0).  Repeatedly issuing 'ifdown ppp0'
eventually clears all instances.

For the record, here is the information you requested.  Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated!
