[hsflinux] Error Message: Sorry, can't open modem

I installed the latest rpm
hsflinmodem-5.03.03.01mbsibeta02050300-1_redhat.i586.rpm, and was able to
run hsfconfig ok. The device is listed as /dev/modem and /dev/ttyHSF0.
However when querying the modem in KPPP, I get "Sorry, can't open modem".

Any help is appreciated.
