[hsflinux] Weird noise problem

Hi list,

I'm requesting your help on the following _very_ strange phenomenon
observed on my ASUS S1 (reportedly having a Conexant HSF modem
- full details at http://unicornandbutterfly.purrsia.com/hsfdiag.txt )

Basically the modem works, but I don't get satisfactory transfer rates -
only about half of what I would expect (and what I actually *get* under
WindowsME - on the very same machine and, of course, the same line!).

The problem under Linux seems to be that there is some easily audible
noise on the phone channel - hence a bad SNR and a quite sub-optimal
connection. Needless to say that no such noise can be heard when
running WindowsME. Fact is, I don't want to use Windows at all ;o) - I only
installed it to check whether this is a hardware problem and apparently
it isn't...

I've also tried to play with the mixer and mute all the channels one by one,
to see if it makes a difference, but it dosen't. I finally disabled the sound
modules just to see whether something's broken there, but to no avail...

Did anyone ever run into a problem like this? I'd really appreciate your
help!

TIA
