  Good point.  But no, I'm using 2.4.16 with APM (and OSS sound if it
  makes a difference here?).  I also tried 2.4.18 with and without ACPI.
  These are single processor kernels, compiled with gcc-2.95.3.  I
  also tried 2.4.18 built with gcc3.1, in each case the parts of the
  HSF driver which are open source were built with the same (I have to
  remove the "-fno-check -fno-rtti" for 2.95).  Anyway, no luck, and
  the return code comes from the pre-compiled portion of the driver,
  otherwise I would try to debug it.
