[hsflinux] Modules not loaded properly (?? perhaps ??)

I have RedHat 9 running on a Dell Inspiron 2650.
I am extremely grateful for hsflinmodem, since it lets me use the
modem.
When I try to dial out, however, I often get the error message
  --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.53
  HSF: ERROR: No CONEXANT modem found
  hsf_request_port: open failed
  --> Cannot open /dev/modem: Input/output error
  --> Cannot open /dev/modem: Input/output error
  --> Cannot open /dev/modem: Input/output error
If I reboot a few times, I can get it to work, but why is the
rebooting necessary? When it works, the modules look like
(output of lsmod | grep hsf)
  hsfich          119116  2  (autoclean)
  hsfserial        26772  0  (autoclean)
  hsfengine      1125932  0  (autoclean) [hsfserial]
  hsfosspec 35164 1 (autoclean) [hsfich hsfserial hsfengine]
When it doesn't work, they look like
  hsfich          119116  0  (autoclean)
  hsfserial        26772  0  (autoclean)
  hsfengine      1125932  0  (autoclean) [hsfserial]
  hsfosspec 35164 0 (autoclean) [hsfich hsfserial hsfengine]

Another curious thing, probably unrelated. When it is working and I
try to dial out, it sometimes take a couple of tries to get a
dial tone and dial. If I run a program that uses sound before I dial
out, there is no problem.

Still, my modem is now usable, so thanks to the people who wrote
hsflinmodem.
