I managed to recreate the problem by connecting and disconnecting the
modem while in console mode.  In this case, the hang happened when
reconnecting after an unexpected disconnection.

There was no kernel panic message.  The console simply became
unresponsive and the cursor's blinking rate decreased to about half of
its normal speed.
