[hsflinux] device not detected by driver

When installing the hsfmodem rpm on SUSE Linux 9.1, I get the
following:

Error: no device detected by hsf driver

This happens whether I use Yast or install the rpm manually. I believe
I am using the correct driver for my modem, a Conexant AC Link 56K
DataFax (1106:3068).

Is there a way to force the driver to recognize the modem? I would
appreciate anyone's ideas.
