Thanks for your suggestion; that may indeed have been the cause.
I now recompiled the 2.6.7 kernel without driver, as suggested,
AND installed hsfmodem_6.03.00lnxt04111200full_i386.deb, downloaded 
today (previously I was using hsfmodem_6.03.00lnxt04082400full_i386.deb,
but I didn't try that one now).  The previous hsfmodem package 
installation problem has disappeared, it seems the installation now ran 
smoothly:
