Hi,

first of all, your modem with PCI ID 8086:24C6 is a MC97 modem and this 
modem could be provided by various manufacturers but only Conexant are 
supported by our modem drivers.

Installing the HSF modem driver is not officially supported on Live CD 
type of Linux distribution and it is likely to not work since the driver 
expects to be able to write in some files which are probably on a 
read-only partition (on the CD). If you install Kubuntu on your hard 
drive, you should be able to use the pre-compiled RPM packages for 
Ubuntu that are available at:
