Hi,

I am pleased to announce the first public open-source release of the
Conexant (Rockwell) RipTide Audio/Communication Controller driver for Linux.

It is now available for download from

        http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv

The README file is appended below.

Cheers
Marc

----

This package contains Linux drivers for the
Conexant (Rockwell) RipTide Audio/Communication Controller.

It was developed by Conexant Systems Inc (Konstantin Lazarev) and
Marc Boucher <marc@mbsi.ca>, who is the current maintainer.

If you have a RipTide HCF modem (127A:4321 or 127A:4331), you need to
install *both* the RIPTIDE and HCF drivers, otherwise the modem will *not*
work.

RipTide HSF modems (127A:4311 or 14F1:4311) require only the HSF driver,
on top of which the RIPTIDE driver can be optionally installed to add audio,
synth, midi, and gameport functionality.

RIPTIDE driver Features:
-----------------------

1. OSS compatible.

2. Full duplex PCM playback and record.

3. Multiple playback channels (/dev/dsp).

4. Mixer support (/dev/mixer).

5. Supports direct access interface for games such as Quake2.

6. Supports OPL3 synthesis (/dev/sequencer)

7. Supports MPU401 external MIDI (/dev/midi)

8. Supports joystick at port 0x201 with system driver
   (joy-analog.o should be loaded)

9. Interoperates with HCF and HSF modem drivers.

The latest version and related information are available
at http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv on the web.

These drivers should work on most current Linux distributions, based on
the 2.2.x or 2.4.x kernels. On some systems, it might be necessary
to disable the "PnP OS" BIOS option if it exists.

See the INSTALL file for installation instructions.

THIS IS PRELIMINARY SOFTWARE WHICH MAY CONTAIN BUGS THAT COULD
CAUSE CRASHES AND DATA CORRUPTION. THE USE OF THIS SOFTWARE
IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. WE DO NOT PRESENTLY RECOMMEND USING IT ON
CRITICAL SYSTEMS AND ONLY AFTER DOING COMPLETE BACKUPS.

Some features may not be implemented or work as expected.
Bug reports are welcome. (see section "REPORTING PROBLEMS" in INSTALL file)

Most files in this package are released under terms similar to the
BSD license. See the files LICENSE for details.

I have a Riptide HSF chipset, with PCI ID 127A:4311, which is listed as
"sound not supported". I have successfully installed the kernel modules
for HSF and Riptide (module versions:  HSF, 5.03.02.L2mbsibeta02060200;
Riptide, 0.3mbsibeta02061200; kernel version 2.4.18, custom compiled on
Debian Woody). After a quick chmod 666 /dev/dsp, I can play things to
the sound card (XMMS shows visualizations properly). However, nothing
comes out of the speakers. The problem is not with the hardware (sound
is fine in Windows 2000 SP2) but something in configuration or the
driver. I am not sure what. Is there any diagnostic information I
could give that would help clear up the "sound not supported" issue?

Also, I just noticed that while playing sound from XMMS, every text
console is flooded with "<RIPTIDE>-------POLL------" messages, with more
dashes than I showed. This doesn't happen when I cat a sound file on
the command line. Thanks for taking on the driver project though; I'm
glad to see someone is working on it even if I don't need the modem
support.

Riptide wizards,

When I use my HSF modem (127a:4310) with the riptide sound driver
[thanks for the driver!] I can't figure out how to mute the modem noise
without muting the PCM audio. Any tips?

	Thanks,

A few issues when trying to use the hcf/riptide drivers (172A 4320)

Any hint/suggestion is welcome, (I can provide additional info if needed)

Fred.

1. After KDE Login:
-------------------

Error Window Displayed: "Sound server fatal error: cpu overload,
aborting"
This happens between 10second to a few minutes after login.

2. POLL messages in /var/log/messages
-------------------------------------

All system resources used by POLL messages loged in /var/log/messages
when playing mp3 using xmms. Exact message is:
    <RIPTIDE> ------------------------------
POLL -----------------------------------------
Problem disapears when removing corresponding 'printk' from
/usr/lib/riptide/modules/riptidem.c (line 2410). Xmms seems to work
smoothly then.

3. Can't get modem to connect to phone line
-------------------------------------------

ATD command doesn't seem to toggle line switch. I checked that using
another phone plugged on the same phone line.

4. Audio CD Playing
-------------------

Audio CD playing works fine as long as don't use any mixer (kmix). As
soon as use kmix, I can only hear the left voice. Killing kmix doesn't make
the balance go back OK.

Hello!

I have a RH 7.3 (kernel 2.4.18) PC with an MSI MS-6368 Mainbord with
integrated trident blade 2d/3d video accelerator and a "Acer Modem 56 Surf
PCI" which uses the Conexant HSFi chipset. All works well as long as I use
(the slow) XF86_SVGA 3.3.6a X-Server.

If I use X 4.2.0 things stop working as soon as I move a window: The
connection gets very bad and the modem hangs up. Any ideas? How to debug
this?

This happens with the modem drivers supplied by conexant as well as with
the new beta drivers. I have tried debian 3.0 as well with a costum 2.4.18
kernel: same situation. It is not with kde, because it happens with fvwm2
as well. I have a cerleon 1100 Mhz cpu and 256 MB RAM.

BTW,
X 4.2.0 dedects the 8 MB RAM (supplied by the main borad), but only uses 4
of them.

Thanks,

Christian

Hello to Riptide users! (and Marc Boucher)

Here's a possible bug report for the beta version of
the Riptide RPM for SuSE 8.0 2.4.18-4GB...

I have successfully loaded the HSF modem RPM, and
minicom works now with the Conexant HSF modem.
However, the Riptide RPM for SuSE 8.0, and the generic
RPM, when loaded, both give depmod errors about

Hi,

A new experimental version of the open-source Conexant (Rockwell) RipTide
Audio/Communication Controller driver for Linux is now available from

        http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv

This release incorporates significant fixes. Keep in mind however that
the driver is still very preliminary.

Nonetheless we recommend that all users of the previous version upgrade.

A detailed list of changes since the first release in June is available below.

Please report any new or persisting problems.

Cheers
Marc

PS: Archived copies of previous releases are available via a link
located at the bottom of the main download page.

Marc,

Great job ! I confirm that artsd now works fine. This is the first time I
get alert sounds under KDE ! Also I confirm that the poll messages have
disappeard. Xmms no longer eats up cpu by flooding the system log. Only the
issue with kmix and CD playing remains (As already reported in my post dated
June 30th)

Unfortunately, I still cannot get my Riptide HCF modem to work (127A:4321).
I am able to successfully use any kind of AT command except ATA, ATH and
ATD. In fact, none of these commands will toggle the line switch and the
line will remain hanged up.

Has anyone been able to have riptide HCF modem to work ? If yes, any
suggestion is welcome,

Thanks,

Fred

Hi,

I am unable to get my Conexant Riptide audio card to work, and I was
wondering if someone on this listserv could help me out.

I downloaded the source for the .4 audio driver and compiled it for my
Mandrake 9 2.4.19 kernel. It installed successfully, and without any
errors, and I can see the mixer, and turn up the mike gain volume till I
hear audio fedback, however when I try to initialize aRts, it fails "unable
to initiallize io" and I lose my mixer- the same thing happens when I try
to run aRts on startup.

I am also unable to play any audio in any of the media players I tried.

Anyone have any ideas? I included the beggining of my dump file, and will
send the whole thing to anyone who wants to take a look.
Also, when I run ripstop I get:
riptidelow: Device or resource busy
re-running ripconfig recomiples and installs without any error however.

Thanks,
--David

Hi,

A new experimental version of the open-source Conexant (Rockwell) RipTide
Audio/Communication Controller driver for Linux is now available from

        http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv

This release provides pre-compiled binaries for RedHat 8.0 and
Mandrake 9.0. An important bug has also been fixed.
Keep in mind however that the driver is still very preliminary.

Nonetheless we recommend that all users of the previous version upgrade.

A detailed list of changes is available below.

Please report any new or persisting problems.

Cheers
Marc

Hello to all,

Is anyone having success installing the Riptide
drivers on an HSF 127A:4311, with the 2.4.18-4GB SuSE
8.0 kernel? I'm getting depmod errors which seem the
same as the last time I tried to install the Riptide
beta drivers, which was probably about 4 months ago.
I'm wondering if the riptide RPM actually has some
dependencies that weren't programmed into the RPM
dependency list... Maybe all I need to do is install
some package from SuSE first, to provide the missing
symbols? Here are the errors:

#ripconfig

RIPTIDE module configuration completed.

---------------------------------------------

To begin, I downloaded then installed the RPM with the
simple rpm install command, using the prebuilt SuSE
2.4.18-4GB RPM's. I first installed the hsflinmodem
RPM, which seemed to install without any errors, then
installed the riptide RPM.

Thanks for any suggestions you may be able to provide
on how you solved these errors.

Hello,

I'm responding to the following posting

I experienced the same problems with Mandrake 9.0 using the prebuilt rpm's
for same kernel version as yours. I can get the sound to work by stopping
the arts deamon then exiting X11. As root remove the old riptide driver rpm
-e riptide then reinstall rpm -i riptide**.rpm.

Do not use the prebuilt librarys and use the lib's provided in the rpm. Go
back into KDE and reinit the arts deamon. This may or maynot work I had to
do several cycles of that to get results from arts although oss + esd
operated fine without dificulties. T

his isn't permanent after I rebooted the sound was gone. Had to redo the
whole proccess. I degraded my kernal version back to 2.4.18-16mdk and I had
non of the problems mentioned.

Just a bit of useless info,
Brad.S

I have a Riptide modem/sound combo card. I installed
both drivers for it in SuSE linux and it seemed to
install fine but it still doesn't detect the modem or
sound. I remember that it said the modem was on
dev/ttyshcfo. I tried to set up the dialer but it
doesn't detect the modem still. I tried the RPM's but
I didn't think it worked so I used the tar files.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance :)

I successfully installed and used Conextant HSF linmodem rpm packages in the
following cases :

SONY VAIO PCG-FX215 (both RH 7.1 and RH 7.3)
SONY VAIO PCG-FXA49 (RH7.3	only tested)

Both are Duron/Athlon machines , so you've got to get the correct athlon .rpm
file for both cases.

Conextant driver seems to work also if you get only the modem identified as
 AC97 (VIA 1106:3068* - VIA MC97 controller for AC-Link modems)

 Good luck everybody else
  Cheers

Thanks for the drivers. Following your instructions, I was able to get
the modem working with the HCF driver. However, I am unable to get
sound to work. Here's the relevant info:

I installed hcfpcimodem-0.98mbsibeta02110300k2.4.18_14-1rh.i586.rpm and
riptide-0.4mbsibeta02110300k2.4.18_14-1rh.i586.rpm. I am using the
following kernel:=20
[root@dhcp17 root]# uname -r
2.4.18-14

Both sndconfig and the new GUI sound configuration app under RH 8 report
no working module found when I try to play a test sound. I can't get
XMMS to do anything but hang when trying to play MP3s.
